Temples of Belgorod

Belgorod is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Russia, but also one of the centers of Russian Orthodoxy. In Belgorod, there are more than two dozen Orthodox churches and temples, some of which we will go on a virtual trip today.

Holy Cross Church, Belgorod

Built in 1862 in the village of Arkhangelskoe, the Church of the Cross Exaltation is a vivid example of provincial architecture of that time. The main shrine of the church is the Miraculous Cross sent to one of the local landowners from Athos monastery. Later, the cross was thrown into the swamp, and then miraculously recovered. On the site of his acquisition, a healing spring was formed, and the cross itself was transferred to the temple for storage.

St. Michael's Church in Belgorod

The history of St. Michael's church in Belgorod began in 1844, when a stone church was built at the expense of local merchant MK Michurin in Pushkar Sloboda. Today St. Michael's Church is declared an architectural monument, but it continues to act. Despite all the events of the 20th century, the unique carved iconostasis and ancient icons have survived to this day.

Pochaev church, Belgorod

The construction of the temple of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God was started in Belgorod in late May 2010. And already at Christmas 2012 the first service was held in the church. Not for nothing Pochaevsky church became a real spiritual symbol of the city for the residents, because the day of celebration of its title icon coincides with the date of liberation of the city in the years of the Great Patriotic War.

Temple of the Archangel Gabriel in Belgorod

Another temple that appeared on Belgorod's map relatively recently is the temple of Archangel Gabriel. It was consecrated in early November 2001 and became a home church of Belgorod State University. The priors of the church see their primary task in the spiritual guidance of students and university staff, and realize it through seminars, conferences and talks on spiritual and moral topics.

Transfiguration Cathedral, Belgorod

The main church of Belgorod was and remains the Transfiguration Cathedral. The first mention of it is found in historical sources, dating back to the beginning of the 17th century. Well, its present form the temple found in 1813, when the two-storeyed church, built in honor of the victory over the French army, was consecrated. During the Soviet era, the temple was for a long time in the jurisdiction of the local museum, and only at the end of the 20th century it opened its doors again for the parishioners.
