Spinners: what is the danger in a fashionable toy?

After the advent of smartphones with unlimited communication capabilities and Internet surfing, the dependence on gadgets began to seem invincible. But only until spinners appeared.

These cult toys have managed to win the attention not only of children who are fond of novelties. Adult people gladly acquire spinning gizmos that relieve stress and come up with all sorts of tricks with their participation. At the same time, doctors are sounding the alarm - they believe that the spinners are capable of causing irreparable harm to health!

What is a spinner?

The full name of the spinner does not sound like fidget spinner, which in Russian means "a toy for unconsumed". It was invented by the US resident Catherine Hettiger, whose daughter suffers from a rare form of muscle fatigue. To alleviate the suffering of the girl, the mother created a mini simulator, working on the principle of a gyroscope. Katherine justly judged that children are constantly turning something in their hands, because this is the toy that her daughter needs. To bring the spinner into action is simple: holding the core of the toy with the two fingers by the two fingers, it is necessary to untwist its outer part. Thanks to the equilibrium device, the spinner rotates for at least two minutes.

The toy, created by Catherine, helped her daughter cope with the manifestations of the disease. The girl's girlfriends saw her as an unusual handmade toy and wanted the same. So the spinner began to seize America, and later the news of new entertainment flew to Europe. Today, 17 out of 20 toys purchased at Amazon and Ebay auctions are all kinds of spinners.

Is the spinner really useful?

The success of the spinners was unexpected not only for Catherine herself: the world-famous toy manufacturers seemed to be interested in high-tech novelties for modern children. Perhaps, it is in this lies the secret of the popularity of the spinner: its simple device does not require significant expenditure of thought energy. The start of the deafening popularity of the toy was given by Forbes journalists: in an interview with them, brokers from Wall Street reported that they consider the presence of a spinner in the office to be a way to achieve success.

Psychologists, unable to recognize the signs of the impending "spinning fever" came out in support of the toy. In the best glossy magazines in the US and Europe, there were also articles on her influence on the human body. There were purely positive characteristics: getting rid of panic attacks and feelings of anxiety, increased concentration and development of fine motor skills of the hands. Spiners are officially recognized as a means to combat bad habits such as smoking, nibbling, or snapping fingers. They were recommended to children with hyperactivity and perception problems as a way to take control of emotions. On the Internet, even there were rave reviews that with the help of spinners, some people won the fear of flying.

The deadly danger of toy-spinners

Very soon the doctors had to regret the laudatory responses to the spinners. School children and adults stopped working and studying, but spent all their free time with a spinning toy. From the developing gadget, it turned into a "killer of the time", which could be spent with advantage - for example, doing sports or making an annual report.

Teachers in US schools have noticed that students are aggressively reacting to an attempt to take away spinners at least for the time of lessons. Some because of them attacked the teachers, threatened them with murder and assault - that's how dependence on the toy manifested itself. Teachers are seeking a ban on the legislative level of the use of spinners in the school: already in 40% of the states anyone who brought it with them to the lessons, is threatened with immediate payment.

But conflicts with teachers and disobedience in lessons can be considered the most insignificant consequences of using the toy. Since the main consumers are still children, for them the spinner device itself already poses a danger: small parts from it can get into the respiratory tract or nasopharynx, and the gyroscope easily slips out of the fingers and damages the skin or mucous membrane of the eye with pointed edges. The human brain is designed in such a way that it is not able to constantly concentrate on one thing: sooner or later, attention will decrease - and then the spinner turns into a dangerous weapon.

What ended the accidents caused by the spinner?

Spinner tricks do not always end in minor injuries. They can cause serious health problems, getting rid of them will not be easy. Kelly Joek of Texas a few weeks ago told reporters how her daughter almost said goodbye to life because of the spinner, bought by the mother. A 10-year-old girl named Britton relieved stress with his help after attending intensive swimming classes. On that ill-fated day, she was driving from the gym in the back seat of my mother's car. Kelly could hear the pounding choked sounds and turn around: her daughter could not speak, but pointed her finger at her throat.

Fortunately, the woman managed to take the child to the hospital, where the detail from the turntable the size of a small coin was extracted by the doctors. Britton will have a long period of rehabilitation and it is not yet known whether her speech function will recover.

Spinnermaniya reached Cyprus, where a resident of Limassol, Haara Antoniou, published a post on the social network about how her daughter became disabled because of games with spinners. The girl wanted to record a video with tricks to put it on the Internet. She lay down on the bed and began to twist the spinner, from which the part separated and fell directly into her mouth. Instinctively, the child made a swallowing movement and a piece of plastic fell into the stomach. It is located next to the large blood vessels, so you can not pull it out. Doctors observe the condition of the girl every day: they are not sure that they will ever be able to rid her of a foreign body.

More often on the Internet there are negative reviews about the spinners, provoking in children attacks of allergy and bronchial asthma. Scientists could find this explanation: all spinners contain lead compounds that have a toxic effect on the human body. It turns out, people themselves are happy to acquire a "top" slowly but surely destroying their health.
