Spanish folk costume

The women's Spanish folk costume was shaped by the Maho culture, the bearers of which were social, folksy Spanish dandies. Rigid frame suits came into vogue in the 16th century at the court of the Spanish Habsburgs, but before that the fashionable aesthetics were extremely controversial. The Renaissance still had its influence on emphasizing graceful forms, and the Catholic Church demanded to hide all the bends of the body - this became one of the main determining factors in the history of the development of the Spanish folk costume.

Features of the female folk costume

The popular Spanish costume for women consisted of a fitted jacket with lapels, a mantilla, which is still the main element in the national costume, a crest for a mantilla, skirts, shawls and an obligatory accessory was a fan.

With the advent of the Renaissance in the 16th century, the traditional outfit changed a little, taking the form of armor on the frame. The costume emphasized graceful female forms, a hard collar helped women to hold their heads proudly raised, a tight corset hiding all the bulges. The female outfit had a perfect triangular silhouette, and in contrast to the harmonious Italian fashion , Spanish clothing represented geometric shapes that distorted the natural female form, leading to deformation. The dresses had a closed, dull bodice of complex cut. A metal spinner was attached to the bodice, which resembled a cone in shape, and this skirt was worn with skirts, upper and lower. The upper skirt had a deep incision in the form of a triangle, which connected with a sharp cape of the bodice. The sleeves had a narrow shape, reaching the length to the wrist. The shoulders in the outfits were very wide, and this effect of voluminous shoulders was created especially with the help of rollers.

Nowadays it is customary to consider the traditional folk costume as an outfit of the flamenco dancer, although there are a lot of folk costumes, depending on the terrain. For example, in the center and in the south, flamenco and bullfight are considered a traditional dress, while Celtic motifs are used in the north.
