Rehabilitation after hip arthroplasty

Previously, people suffering from coxarthrosis or fracture of the neck of the hip, lost the ability to move independently and became disabled. The achievements of modern surgery can completely replace damaged areas with synthetic implants and return to normal life. The main role in this is rehabilitation after hip arthroplasty. This process begins immediately after the operation and lasts, as a rule, about 1 year.

Stages of the rehabilitation period after total hip arthroplasty

Restoration, of course, depends on what ailment the total (complete) replacement of the moving parts of the joint, neglect of the pathology, age and overall health of the patient was performed. Rehabilitation activities are compiled in detail by the attending physician, but conditionally they can be divided into 5 stages:

Early recovery after endoprosthetics of the movable parts of the hip joint

Rehabilitation is a whole complex of activities. It consists mainly of exercise therapy, but in the first few days after surgery it involves taking certain medications:

Physiotherapy on the seam area - UHF, DMV, UFO, magnetic effect will also be required.

Physiotherapy in the zero and the first phase is the slow performance of simple exercises lying in bed:

  1. Move the foot up and down, spinning.
  2. Strain of the quadriceps muscle (10 seconds), buttocks.
  3. Pulling the heel to the buttocks with knee flexion.
  4. Retracting the leg in the side and returning to the starting position.
  5. Raising a straight leg above the surface of the bed.

From 1-4 days it is allowed to sit, stand and even move with the help of walkers or crutches. It will not be superfluous to perform such exercises:

  1. Putting back the straight leg.
  2. Bending of a healthy and operated limb in the hip and knee joint.
  3. Slow waving your foot to the side.

Rehabilitation in the first 8 weeks after total hip arthroplasty

During the 2 nd and 3 rd stage of recovery, you need to gradually increase the load:

  1. Walk with a cane.
  2. Rise and descend the stairs using a crutch.
  3. To retract the leg (standing) back, forward, to the side with resistance, for example, using an elastic band tied to a chair.
  4. To practice on an exercise bike with small (short) pedals.
  5. Train the balance (do not stand on one leg for long).
  6. Trying to walk back.
  7. Perform exercises with a step-platform (only under the supervision of a doctor).

It is important to ensure that the gymnastics is not accompanied by discomfort. An easy pain is tolerated.

Complete recovery after total hip arthroplasty

Approximately on 9-10 weeks after the operation pain syndrome disappears and, as a rule, patients are able to move independently, which often serves as an excuse to stop exercise LFK. But this stage is one of the most important, as it allows to completely restore the functions, strength, mobility of the hip joint, normal sense of balance.

Suggested exercises:
