Making a route to the sights of Quito , be sure to include in it the park of La Carolina - one of the largest parks of Quito (its area is 6.7 hectares). The park is located in the northern part of the city in the commercial and business district. Restrained landscape design of the park and towering high-rise buildings give it a similarity to the central park of New York.
The history of the La Carolina park
The park was laid in 1939 and instantly became a favorite vacation spot for townspeople. Time passed, infrastructure developed, sports and children's playgrounds appeared. In the western part a small botanical garden was opened. The decoration of the southern part of the park was a wonderful little lake, where anyone could rent a boat and ride on the water. In 1985, a large Catholic mass was held in the park, attended by Pope John Paul II himself. In memory of this significant event for the city-Catholics, a giant Christian cross was established. Now it stands in the middle of a small square Cruz del Papa, in the center of the park.
Entertainment and leisure in the park of La Carolina
Park La Carolina is ideal for a family picnic or a walk with friends. Every day it is crowded: in the morning, warm-up lovers of sports come out, in the afternoon there are moms with strollers, students and employees of nearby offices who left for a break. Evening is the time of noisy youth. Beginning musicians often arrange concerts and invariably have success. In the botanical garden, visitors are waiting for tropical plants, where alone the orchids are more than 100 species. Complementing the riot of the flora is a picturesque pond with a mini waterfall and goldfish. In the depths of the park an exhibition hall has been built, in which the opening day is regularly held. Park La Carolina - a paradise for the half-finishers of sports. Football and basketball fields, a sports track, an exercise room, bicycle routes, tracks for skateboarding. For children - a park of dinosaurs, a living area with pets and playgrounds. And, of course, the main decoration of the park is a pond where you can rent a boat with oars and go on a pleasant and romantic trip.
How to get there?
La Carolina Park is located between the lively avenues of Rio Amazonas, Los Siris, Naciones Unidas and Ella Alfaro. To get there by public transport is very easy, you can go to any nearest stop to the park, for example, at 10 Agosto Avenue or Estazione (these streets are parallel to Rio Amazonas and Los Cyris respectively) and 5 minutes walk. Near the park there is parking.
