Gluteal presentation of the fetus - causes

Throughout the period of pregnancy the baby moves in the mother's womb, as he wants. But closer to 32-36 weeks, most children try to adopt a position convenient for birth, that is, head down. But 4-5% of children can take the position of the buttocks down. A similar position of the child is called a pelvic or gluteal presentation .

Types of breech presentation

There are two types of breech presentation:

  1. Purely breech presentation of the fetus. The child's straight legs are directed upwards, buttocks - down.
  2. Mixed breech presentation of the fetus. Buttocks crumbs with bent legs pointing down. Mixed breech presentation can be glutes-leg and foot.

Causes of breech presentation

The causes of breech presentation of the fetus are:

The breech delivery is usually successful, but this position of the fetus is associated with an increased risk of umbilical cord prolapse due to the fact that the buttocks or legs of the baby do not cover the cervix, and, therefore, do not interfere with the umbilical cord being inserted into the vagina.

Since in this case the body and legs of crumbs appear first, the head can pinch the umbilical cord, thereby reducing the flow of oxygen through the placenta. The danger also lies in the fact that the buttocks and legs may be born before the full opening of the cervix is sufficient to pass the head, and this leads to a delay in the birth of the head. There is also a risk of damage to the baby's spine at birth.

In order to prevent breech presentation of the fetus, pregnant women are recommended special gymnastics. The doctor explains to the woman what exercises to do, proceeding from the right or left is the baby's head.
