Fortress of Wright Hill


Fortress Wright Hill - is a landmark suburb of Wellington, New Zealand . For today it is listed in the list of historical places of the first category. Surprisingly, the Fort was never used for its intended purpose. A grandiose project was created for several years from 1935 to 1942, after which two 9.2 inch guns were installed for two years. The plans were also the third, but the Second World War ended and the need for a fortress disappeared.

Fortress Wright Hill - this grandiose military structure, which required colossal communications to ensure viability. For this purpose, many kilometers of tunnels were dug at a depth of 50 feet. They were planned to be used as warehouse and office premises, there are even several large rooms intended for the stay of government officials. Unfortunately, not all rooms and halls are open for excursions, but visitors have the opportunity to inspect several 600 meter tunnels. This is more than enough to assess the scale of the fortress.

After the tour, visitors have a clear idea of ​​the protection measures that New Zealand took during World War II.

  1. Underground rooms were repeatedly used as scenery in European films, but the biggest "role" of the fort was in the film "The Brotherhood of the Ring". Tunnels have provided a unique audio palette for the voice acting of the film.
  2. To get inside the fortress, you can only open days: Day of Waitangi, ANZAC DAY, Birthday of the Queen of New Zealand, Labor Day and December 28th. In the remaining days, you can only walk around the fort and use the tablets to find out interesting facts about the fortress.

How to get there?

The fortress is on Wrights Hill Rd. In order to reach it, you need to go along Karori Avenue, then turn to Campbell St, drive past Ben-Ben Park and after 750 meters turn right and you will be next to Wright Hill.
