14 of the most unexpected ingredients that may appear in your perfume

You did not even imagine what could be contained in your favorite perfume! For you it will be a surprise to learn that initially some of the individual ingredients for perfume, before processing and mixing with other flavors, produce a disgusting smell.

Man has used fragrances in various fields for ages, for example, to appease the gods, improve the fragrance in the room, and in the Middle Ages invented the first perfume to disguise the stench of unwashed body.

Today perfume is an integral part of modern man. Spirits are used to bring into their image a certain zest, mystery and exclusivity. Not many know what ingredients can be used to create a wonderful fragrance.

Musk of musk deer and civet

How often have you noticed that in your spirits the ingredient of musk is described, and you know it, as a sweetish-tart aroma, driving crazy. But it may be a shock to you that musk is a sharp, unpleasantly smelling substance produced in the glands of musk animals, mostly in reindeer, to attract individuals of the opposite sex. But already more than 1000 years ago, perfumers discovered that musk can enhance the fragrance of perfume and play on the body of each person in different ways.

So, perfumery used the musk of an animal musk deer, but in the 70s of the XX century it was banned, because earlier, to collect musk from an animal from the gland, it had to be killed. Also used is the musk of the animal civet, which lives in Africa and India. However, now in the modern world there are special farms in which musk animals are grown and precious musk is taken out by means of temporary anesthesia, after which the animal continues to live and live.

2. The Belladonna

This plant has an acceptable aroma, but most of all belladonna attracts attention to the fact that in ancient times with it wizards and witches made love potions or used in such rituals.

3. Beaver jet

The beaver jet is the secretion of the preputial glands located near the anus in the beavers. The animal uses this secret to mark the territory. For perfumers, this substance is similar to musk according to the principle of action and is used to make elite perfumery.

4. Dimethylsulfide

This synthetic substance itself has a mixed smell of sulfur and onion, reminiscent of the flavor of a durian fruit, or smells like a lily of a dead horse. But a similar note was also found in geraniums and roses, so dimethyl sulphide is used to enhance the floral aroma of roses in geranium oil or to give a touch of the smell of the sea in perfumery.

5. Marijuana

According to some perfumers, fragrant marijuana can add a touch of forest aroma to the spirits and is able to give a sense of peace and tranquility.

6. Oil of Costusa

The fragrance of the costus resembles that of a dog's wet wool, and it is very sharp. Not so long ago this plant was forbidden to use in perfumery, as it is a strong allergen. Before this ban, from the dry roots of the plant, oil was obtained and widely used in making perfume for men.

In combination with other fragrances of animal origin, the oil of the cassis gave the spirits a touch of iris or unripe watermelons. In modern perfumery they use synthetic to replace this oil, but so far no one has been able to simulate and approach identical to the natural aroma of the oil of the costus.

7. Ash

Some perfumers use ash to make man's perfume to give the flavor of brutality and some male maturity. Sometimes this component is found in women's perfumes.

8. Phenols

Phenols occupy the lion's share in the production of various flavors. Many plants produce them naturally to protect them from insects. But most often used phenols, called kreozolami, which were obtained from a by-product of coal tar - creosote. Many of the phenols individually resemble the smell of human or horse urine. But they play an important role in reproducing the scents of many colors in combination with other perfume ingredients.

9. Aldehydes

These are completely synthetic substances used in perfumery for more than 100 years, but they gained special popularity after the presentation of the fragrance Chanel No. 5 by Ernest Bo. These substances give sparks to the spirits, a real fountain of feelings.

10. Ambergris

This is a fairly rare substance with a disgusting odor, which is secreted in the sperm whale by intestinal secretion. Therefore, to become suitable for perfumery, amber should be spent in the salt water of the ocean for several years, since the fresh substance extracted from the whale is absolutely not suitable because of the abominable odor. After the required exposure, the ambergris acquires floral fragrance and loses most of its unpleasant odor.

This substance is used as a fixer for the resistance of spirits. After all, even his slightest dose can keep the odor of perfume on the skin of a person for several days. Previously, this ingredient was a part of almost all the flavors, today it is added only to elite perfumes because of its high cost.

11. Indole

This powerful substance, which has a very sharp fecal odor, is found in many white flowers, such as lilies or jasmine. Apply it to create and enhance floral scents. For example, a synthetic billet with the aroma of jasmine will never smell really jasmine, until it drips into this foul-smelling substance.

12. Mercaptans

These are chemicals that have a simply disgusting smell with a pronounced sulphurous shade resembling the terrible smell of rotten cabbage. They are also contained in the gases of the human intestine. However, when properly processed, mercaptans give the perfume a sweetish fruity or coffee flavor.

13. Scatole

This chemical also has an extremely fetid odor, even if it is strongly diluted. In natural conditions, it occurs in coal tar and feces, as well as in a very small amount in some colors, for example, orange or jasmine. Therefore, with the correct mixing of aromas and in small doses, scatol is able to transform the smell of perfume, giving them a floral hue.

14. Sperm and blood

These screaming and very repellent ingredients in perfume dared to apply the scandalous perfume brand Etat Libre d'Orange. So, the series of spirits "Wonderful secretions" (Sécrétions Magnifiques) includes notes of sperm and blood. As the creator Etienne de Swardt himself argues, he decided to apply these natural flavors to recreate the tastes and smells of carnal pleasures.
