Where is Mount Everest?

Even from the school bench, we remember that the highest point of our planet is Everest. Let's find out exactly where this mountain peak is located, and what interesting facts are connected with it.

Where is the summit of Everest?

Mount Everest, or, as it is called in another way, Jomolungma is one of the tops of the Himalayan mountain system . It is impossible to name exactly the country where Mount Everest is located, since it is located right on the border of Nepal and China. It is believed that its highest peak still belongs to China, or more precisely - to the Tibet Autonomous Region . At the same time, the steepest slope of the mountain is southern, and Everest itself has the shape of a pyramid consisting of three faces.

Everest was named in honor of the Englishman, who made a great contribution to the study of geodesy in this area. The second name - Jomolungma - the mountain received from the Tibetan expression "qomo ma lung", which means "Divine mother of life". The highest peak of the Earth has a third name - Sagarmatha, which is translated from the Nepalese language - "Mother of the Gods". This confirms that the ancient inhabitants of Tibet and Nepal considered the origin of such a high mountain not only as a manifestation of the higher deity.

As for the height of Mount Everest, it is exactly 8848 m - this is the official figure regulating the height of this mountain above sea level. It also includes glacial deposits, while the height of a purely solid mountain rock reaches a little less - 8844 m.

The first to conquer this height was a resident of New Zealand E. Hillary and a Sherp (inhabitant of the surroundings of Jomolungma in Nepal) T. Norgay in 1953. After that, numerous records of ascents to Everest were set: the most difficult route, climbing without using oxygen cylinders, the maximum duration of stay at the top, the age of the youngest (13 years old) and the oldest (80 years) conqueror of Everest and others.

How to get to Everest?

Now you already know where Everest is located. But getting to it is not so easy as it seems at first glance. First of all, in order to rise to the top of the world, it is necessary in a literal sense to enroll in the queue and wait at least several years. The simplest way to do this is as part of an expedition from one of the specialized commercial firms: they provide the necessary equipment, train and ensure the relative safety of climbers during the ascent. Both Chinese and Nepalese authorities earn well on those wishing to conquer Mount Everest: a pass to the foot of the mountain and permission for the subsequent rise will cost the wishing to the amount of about 60 thousand US dollars!

In addition to the colossal amount of money, you will have to spend about 2 months for acclimatization, the necessary minimum training and self-improvement. It should also be borne in mind that a safe ascent to Mount Everest is possible only at certain times of the year: from March to May and from September to the end of October. All the rest of the year in the area where Mount Everest is, there are extremely unfavorable for alpinism weather conditions.

The history of ascents to Jomolongmu knows more than 200 tragic events. Both beginners and experienced pilots died when trying to conquer the summit. The main reasons for this are the harsh climate (at the top of the mountain the temperature drops below -60 ° C, winds blow in the wind), very rarefied mountain air, snow avalanches and drifts. Even cases of mass death of expeditions on Mount Everest are known. Particularly complex is considered to be a section of a very smooth rocky slope, when only 300 m remains to the top: it is called "the longest mile on the planet".
