Theaters of Rostov-on-Don

The city of five seas, the "gate of the North Caucasus", a city that is one of the ten largest cities in Russia - all this is about Rostov-on-Don. But Rostov-on-Don is not only an industrial city, first of all, it is one of the most beautiful cities and the cultural capital of the south of Russia. To date, in Rostov-on-Don, there are nine theaters that delight residents and visitors of the city with unique productions and stellar compositions of their troupes.

Academic Theater of Drama. M. Gorky, Rostov-on-Don

The history of the Rostov Theater. M. Gorky began in June 1863, when the stationary troupe of the theater gave its first performance. For the years of existence, the drama theater scene saw many stars of first Soviet and then Russian art - great Rostislav Plyatt and Vera Maretskaya shone on the stage here, Yuri Zavadsky and Kirill Serebrennikov staged performances.

Separately it is worth mentioning the unusual building of the theater, which has the form of a tractor, as a symbol of the greatness of agricultural machinery in Rostov-on-Don. The theater found its building in 1935 and successfully worked until 1943, when it was blown up by the retreating Germans. In 1963, the building of the theater was restored, however, a little diminished in size. Because of the unusual shape, the people dubbed the Gorky Theater in Rostov-on-Don a "tractor".

Rostov State Puppet Theater

The puppet theater of Rostov-on-Don can be called without exaggeration one of the oldest in the country. His story began in the 20s of the 20th century with a group of puppeteers who gave their performances to local children. They did it so talented that the local leadership in 1935 decided to create a puppet theater. Since then, the theater has presented to its young spectators more than 5,000 performances.

Youth Theater, Rostov-on-Don

The youth theater of Rostov began its history in March 1894, when members of the local theater society submitted a request to the city duma for the construction of a theater building. In 1899, the building of the theater was rebuilt and in 1907 several theater companies began to work in it. Since1966, one of the children's theaters of Rostov-on-Don, the theater of the young spectator, has also worked here, and since 2001 it has received the name of the Rostov Regional Academic Youth Theater.
