The Flåm Railway


About 80 years ago in the southern part of Norway was laid Flåm Railway (Flamsbana), the route of which now passes through picturesque valleys between high mountains and waterfalls. History of the construction of the Flåm Railway

The planning of the construction of a railway connection that would connect Oslo with Bergen , began in 1871. At that time it was decided that the Flåm Railway would consist of two branches. Contrary to the fact that the first engineering projects began to be created already in 1893, the final plan was approved only in 1923. The construction of the Flåm Railway in Norway began in 1924, and the first regular flight was launched in 1939.

General characteristics of the Flåm Railway

Nowadays, Flomzban is used more for tourist purposes. It passes through the picturesque valley of Flomsdalen and connects with the fjord of Sogne . The length of the Flåm Railway is more than 20 km, during which it rises to an altitude of 865 m above sea level. Almost every 18 m of the path there is an increase in the height difference of 1 m.

Approximately the third part (6 km) of the Flåm Railway, a photo of which can be seen below, falls on tunnels. A total of 20, some of them were built by hand. The most difficult part on this route is the Vende tunnel.

A journey through the mountain railway of Flåmsbahn is one of the most peculiar Norwegian attractions. Annually it is made by almost 600 thousand tourists.

The higher the road leaves, the fewer buildings and more natural objects occur along its path. If there are 450 people in Flom, then there are only a dozen of them in Myrdal village. Here there are only a few houses, whose residents are already accustomed to the incessant influx of tourists.

As soon as the train leaves the station of Khorein, an incredible view opens up to the valley of Flomsden. From here you can see small farmsteads, the Ruandefossen waterfall and the Flåm church, whose age is more than 300 years old. Climbing up the Flåm railway, another spectacular view opens up to Norway. There are also farmsteads, Berekvvamsiellet gorge, bridge and river Flomselva. Before the final destination the train stops at the foot of the Kiossfossen waterfall .

On each station of the Flom railway, the train costs only a few minutes, during which it is possible to consider the nearest attractions and make memorable photos.

How to get to the Flåm Railway?

To go on a famous route, you need to go to the south-west of the country. The Flåm Railway starts at Flåm Station, 355 km from Oslo and 100 m from the Aurlandsfjorden Bay. From the capital to this station you can fly for 50 minutes. by the airlines of Wideroe, SAS and KLM, which land in Sogndal. From Oslo to the Flåm Railway, you can also reach the Rv7 and Rv52. In this case, the entire journey takes a maximum of 5 hours.
