Ornament of Russian folk costume

Russian women did not have a European abundance of fabrics for making clothes. All that was available to them is flax, cotton and wool. But all the same Russian managed to create out of small outfits of surprising beauty. And this was achieved thanks to the ornaments of the Russian folk costume. Ornament at that time acted not only as an ornament, but also as an amulet. So, the elements of folk costume were enriched with storing embroidery and patterned weaving. Such amulets were embroidered on the edges of clothing, namely on the hem, cuffs and collar. These were embroidered letters-ideograms that protect people from adversity. Ornaments were carried out in certain colors, which also have special significance. The most popular color is red, which symbolizes fire, life and blood.

The main element of the Russian folk costume was a shirt with a richly embroidered collar. The sleeves of the shirt must necessarily have been wide and long, but the wrists are wrapped in braid. Over the shirts of a woman wore a sundress . It had the form of a high skirt with straps and was sewn from linen, wool and cotton fabric. The decor used tapes, fringe, braid and colored strips of cotton. The third essential part of the attire was a skirt. It is worth noting that married women wore ponone, which differed from the usual skirt swash-shaped with an uncross-cut slit on the side.

Do not forget about the apron. Women wore it over a shirt or sarafan. The apron, as an element of the Russian costume, was also equipped with a rich symbolic ornament, embodying Russian ancient traditions and amulets associated with nature.

The final element of the Russian national costume was a headdress, which at that time was a kind of visiting card. On it it was possible to determine the age and place from where the woman arrived and her social position. Girls' headdresses had an open crown. Most often used bandages and tapes. But the married completely closed their hair. The dresses were decorated with beads, ribbons and embroidery.
