Motivation as a function of management

Motivation is the only way to encourage an individual worker to work to achieve the organization's goals. Self-sacrificing fanatics in the world are too few, as there are few and those who can hold on to their business. All that remains for organizations is to invent cunning motivating moves, as a result of which the lazy person will want to work.

Motivation as a function of management has a dual structure. On the one hand, human behavior in the working environment is predetermined by a number of external factors. On the other hand, internal factors have much greater power over personality. External factors of motivation are work with incentives.

Different types of motivation

The most typical motivation is "carrot with a whip". Alas, most people dream of an authoritarian boss. Then you can unsubscribe from any responsibility, feeling only the executor of the supreme will.

Authoritarian motivation, as a function of managing an organization, presupposes the presence of workers who initially do not like work and try to avoid any labor. On this basis, employees must be coerced, threatened with punishment, and controlled. Since the average employee wants to be controlled, his motivation is the desire for security and lack of responsibility.

Innovations in the field of motivation "carrot and stick" were produced in the twentieth century. Far-sighted managers realized that further making people work on the verge between hunger and earnings will not work, therefore, the notions of "sufficient day-to-day production", piecework wage system were introduced.

The reverse side of the coin is democratic motivation, as the main function of management. In this case, for the worker the state of labor is natural. Management is based on people's inclination to self-control, because the collective serves the purposes to which it is committed.
