Curtains for the living room with their own hands

We used to go for new curtains in a specialized store. However, when the house has a sewing machine, beautiful material and patterns of curtains for the living room, a wonderful new thing for windows can be made by hand.

If your living room is decorated in a classical style , then the curtains should also be classic and no other. Classic curtains are used more often than others. They always remain in fashion and do not cease to be in demand.

What is needed to sew the curtains in the living room?

Classic curtains include straight curtains made from traditional fabrics and complemented by thin curtains made of tulle material. Such a simple model can be sewn by yourself almost every housewife.

So, for the manufacture of curtains we will need: any sewing machine, iron, ruler, scissors, sewing pins and threads, the right fabric.

To sew classic curtains in the living room, a pattern is not needed. It is enough to measure the length of the cornice and the height from the eaves to the floor, after which to calculate how much material is needed for sewing. For example, the length of the ledge is 200 cm, and the height from the ledge to the floor is 220 cm. The most important parameter is the length of the curtains, while the width can be chosen in its own way. Depending on how much you want to have folds on the curtains, the fabric is taken for two or three lengths of the cornice.

If the selected fabric has a pattern, it will need more. Patterns on curtains should look symmetrical. In an extreme case, with the meter you will be able to determine the sellers in the store. When buying material, do not forget about the allowances for seams. The length is taken with a small margin. On the upper allowance is quite enough 5 cm, and on the wide lower should go about 10-15 cm. Since our classic curtains will be sliding, the width of one half of the curtains should be equal to the length of the cornice. Do not forget about all the allowances.

So, we will calculate how much tissue is needed for the sliding curtains of our size. To the length 220 add 5 cm (upper allowance) and 15 cm (lower allowance), the total is 240 cm. To the width of 200 cm add 10 cm to all allowances, leaves 210 cm, which we multiply by 2 (two halves), we get total 420 cm.

Classic curtains for the living room - how to sew?

  1. After the fabric of the necessary size is acquired, it is necessary to cut the curtains correctly. Folding the fabric in half, cut its width into two equal cuts and turn them upside-down. Fold the side edge of the fabric 2 cm and smoothen it with an iron, as shown in the photo.
  2. After that, for another 3 cm we will tuck the edge of the fabric, iron it and clip the edge with the sewing pins. We will do the same on the other side. In the photo we see what should come out.
  3. Spread the curtain on the sewing machine as close as possible to the edge. To fix the thread at the end, we make a double stitch 2-3 cm long. Repeat all the above operations and with the second half of the curtains.
  4. Now we have to sew the bottom edge of each curtain. Be sure to make sure that the curtain fabric lies on the wrong side up. Then measure from the bottom edge of 5 cm and iron the fabric. Then we again wrap the edge of the curtains by 10 cm, smooth and pin them.
  5. Carefully lay the sewing machine line. In the photo you can see what a pretty wide edge is obtained on the lower edge of the curtain.
  6. The curtains are almost ready! It remains only to sew the top edge of the curtains, and also fix the rings on the clips. As we have already done, bend the fabric by 2 cm and iron it. We wrap the edge of the curtain for another 3 cm, iron it again and pin up the sewing pins.
  7. We process the upper edge of each curtain on the sewing machine as neatly as the previous ones. At the same intervals, it remains to fix the rings on the clips and hang new classic curtains on the cornice.
The living room is transformed!
