Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, or the First English Church, is located in the city of Port-of-Spain on the island of Trinidad . The history of this temple began in the 18th century, when a small wooden church was in its place, but in 1809 a terrible fire took place in the city, which spared nothing, even religious buildings. So, the authorities had to build a new church, so that same year the British crown donated money to the church. Construction of the Holy Trinity Cathedral was completed only after 9 years, and five years later, on May 25, 1823, the church was consecrated.

What to see?

The architecture of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is interesting enough, because it reflects the Georgian style mixed with the Gothic, while elements of the Victorian era are present. The construction of the cathedral was of great importance, therefore Colonial Secretary Philip Reinagle worked on his plan. It was he who designed the beautiful console roof beam, which was made of wood, taken from local forests. The altar of the cathedral is constructed of selected mahogany and is decorated with alabaster and marble. All this has survived to the present day. Also the eye of tourists will be pleased with the window of stained-glass windows, on which the saints are depicted.

Inside the temple there is a statue of marble dedicated to the founder of the church. In addition, at that time he was also the governor - Sir Ralph Woodford. The walls are "decorated" with tablets that tell of important members of the British elite of colonial times. This is part of the national history, and not just the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

Also in the temple there is another amazing statue, which is considered a local relic - a wooden statue of Jesus Christ. The legend says that in the XVII century it belonged to the church in Veracruz. She was carried by the island of Trinidad on the ship. But the ship was very overloaded and the captain could not cope with the fact that the ship constantly carried to the shore of the island, so it was decided to leave part of the cargo, including a statue of Jesus Christ. Residents of the city perceived this as a sign from above and immediately made a wooden statue itself the most revered sacred relic. This legend is passed down from generation to generation, so still "gift" from an unknown captain is considered the greatest value.

Where is?
