As it turned out, many representatives of cinema art expressed dissatisfaction because of the selection of nominees by the jury team members. The fact is that of the twenty potential owners there was not one actor of African-American origin. It is known that America is very sensitive about the issue of racism. The first to provoke a racial scandal at the Oscars in 2016 was the actor and producer Spike Lee. He openly declared boycotting the whole team because of the absence of African-American nominees. The dark-skinned actor was actively supported by the wife of star macho Will Smith. Jada Pinkett-Smith called to boycott the ceremony of presenting the golden statuette.

Because of the scandal in social networks, the world award was called 2016 "White Oscar". In addition, the issue of racial discrimination has smoothly shifted to the topic of the absence of a gold award from the stars of non-traditional sexual orientation. As the head of the organization of the ceremony, Cheryl Bun Isaacs, stated, members of the Academy are simply obliged to take into account such differences of candidates as gender, race, sexual orientation.
