- it is extremely strong - 3 times stronger than sheep;
- practically not subject to rolling and stalling;
- hypoallergenic.
The alpaca fibers are smooth and pleasant to the touch, while the sheep are scaly and more prickly. And the natural color palette of this wool is much wider - it comes to 22 two shades, ranging from classic black and white to brown and bordeaux. This coat is never painted.
But on the whole, other types of wool, such as cashmere, merino, angora and others, possess the same characteristics to some extent. Alpaca is also credited with the medicinal properties of camel hair and the softness of the lamas fibers. Therefore, in order to understand the peculiarities of this particular material, a few words need to be said about the breeds of animals. This is the moment you can, with competence in the matter, clarify in the store, acquiring a female coat from alpaca. And this will in many respects affect the final cost of the product.
The most common alpaca:
- Ukayaya . More common breed. Its wool is actively used in mixed and pure formulations for women's demi-seasonal coats from alpaca, and it is this that manufacturers most often mean when they write "alpaca."
- Suri . These animals make up only 5% of all alpacas in the world, so the cost of their wool is 2 times more expensive than the previous one. The fibers are about 19-25 microns.
A separate category is "baby alpaca" - very delicate, the rarest and most expensive wool of the highest quality. Types of Italian alpaca coats
The origin of things and fabrics is given great attention. The fact is that if the animals themselves live in the territory of the Peruvian Andes, then the wool itself is produced mainly in Italy. There its composition is also formed: pure, with a greater or lesser content of other threads. Below are exemplary combinations of fabrics that can be found in autumn and winter coats from alpaca of Italian origin:
- Pure 100% alpaca.
- Suri alpaca 80% + wool "virginia" 20% ("virginia" shear from young, 4-6 month old Merino).
- 80% sheep wool + 10% cashmere + 10% alpaca. Here the coarseness of ordinary wool is softened by the use of more silky fibers.
- Sheep wool 40% + cotton 15% + mohair 15% + alpaca 15%. This combination is appropriate for outerwear for the off-season.
- Cotton 60%, polyamide / polyester 10%, wool 25%, alpaca 5%. Lightweight composition. Synthetics adds to increase the wear resistance of the product, as well as to better keep the shape.
