Defender of the Fatherland Day - the history of the holiday

In all countries of the post-Soviet space, not only the International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 , but also the day devoted to the strong half of humanity. The holiday dedicated to the Day of Defender of the Fatherland has long lost its political significance, but we still try to congratulate all men and present them with pleasant gifts.

The history of the Defender of the Fatherland Day

Although today we celebrate this date exclusively as a male analogue of the eighth of March, but initially it was closely connected with political state events. The beginning of its appearance falls on January 15 (according to the new style this date falls on January 28) in 1918, the day of the decree on the creation of the Red Army.

A little later on February 23, the Council of People's Commissars published a so-called appeal to the people. About a day later, active mobilization of the people begins and people begin to enroll in the ranks of the spacecraft in large numbers.

According to one of the versions of the history of the Day of Defender of the Fatherland, it was on February 23 that the first victory was won by the Red Army. There is a second, more believable version, when the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland appeared. In about two weeks, a petition was submitted for consideration of declaring Army Day on January 15. But the consideration of this petition was slightly delayed and as a result of the holiday, the Defender of the Fatherland Day went down in history on February 23.

It is interesting that, according to the history of the Day of Defender of the Fatherland, it was decided to celebrate only once, and then postpone the date on January 15. But as a result, the date of the holiday remained the same in people's minds. Because later in 1922 the holiday, dedicated to the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland, was officially recognized.
