Danilov Monastery in Moscow

In Moscow , on the right bank of the Moskva River, one of the oldest monasteries of Russia - Danilov Monastery - is located. This is the first male monastery of the Golden-head, which belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church. Thousands of Orthodox people rush to the holy monastery to see it with their own eyes and say a prayer here.

The history of the St. Daniel Monastery

The oldest Moscow monastery was founded in 1282 by order of the Moscow prince Daniil of Moscow, the son of Prince Alexander Nevsky. The construction was dedicated to the heavenly patron of the prince - Daniil Stolpnik.

Danilov Monastery had to go through a difficult story. In 1330, Prince John Kalita decided to transfer the monastic brethren to the Kremlin in order to save her from the frequent raids of the Tatars. Gradually, the holy abode came to desolation and partially collapsed. However, in 1560 the monastery was recalled: on the orders of Tsar Ivan the Terrible it was restored. The monastery, which received independence from the Savior's Transfiguration Cathedral, was again populated by monks. A little later was found the grave of Prince Daniel, who died in the monastic rank. He was ranked as a saint.

Interesting is the fact that in 1591 at the walls of the monastery there were military clashes between the army of Prince Vasily Shuisky and rebel groups of Bolotnikov and Pashkov. Then, during the Time of Troubles, the monastery was badly damaged by the arson set up by False Dmitry II. But in the XVII century the monastic complex was surrounded by stone walls with towers.

The old cathedral was demolished and rebuilt in 1729, in this form it survived to our times. In the XIX century, prominent church and cultural figures of Russia were buried here at the cemetery of the Danilov Monastery.

In 1918 the monastery was officially closed, but in reality here the monks continued to live until 1931. After the closure in the building of the Danilov Monastery, the NKVD isolator was placed. In 1983, the decree of L.I. Brezhnev Monastery complex was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. He was restored at a rapid pace in just 5 years, so much so that in 1988 it was decided to organize a center for the celebration of the Millennium of the Baptism of Rus.

The architecture of the Danilov Monastery in Moscow

Danilov Monastery is a vivid example of Russian architecture. Formation of today's complex of monastic buildings took place in the XVIII-XIX centuries. Trinity Cathedral, for example, was built in 1838 in the style of Russian classicism. The building, decorated on the facade with Tuscan porticos and a dome rotunda, has a cubic form crowned with a round drum with 8 windows with a turret head.

The Church in the name of the Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils is the first stone temple of the complex, which was rebuilt for several centuries. Now it is an unusual composition for the architecture of the capital from the two upper temples on one lower one.

The gate church of Simeon the Stylite was built over the Holy Gates of the monastery in 1731. A tiered temple built in elegant Baroque style (which, by the way, is also often used in interior design ), is decorated with pants and balusters.

Memorial chapel and Nadkladeznaya chapel in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, built by the architect Y.G. Alonova in 1988, perfectly blended into the overall style of the monastery ensemble.

In addition to the temples, there are the Residential Chambers, the Department of External Church Relations, the Brotherhood Corps and the Residence of the Holy Synod and the Patriarch.
