Belgorod-Dniester fortress

The history of the Belgorod-Dnestrovskaya (Akkermanskaya) fortress goes back to the 13th century. It is believed that it was then that the construction of this fortification was started. This majestic fortress was laid on the ruins of the ancient city of Tire, which once belonged to the Greeks. This fortification is entrenched by an impressive ditch, a width of more than 10 meters and a depth of 14-15 meters. This memo is, perhaps, the most well-preserved monument on the territory of Ukraine. In this material we suggest the reader to get acquainted with the most interesting places of the fortress, and also learn a little more about its history.

General information

It is difficult to imagine, but the first people lived in these places about 1 000 000 years ago, this is evidenced by artifacts found during large-scale archaeological excavations conducted on the ruins of the ancient city of Tire. Previously, the defense complex of the fortress consisted of four independent sectors, each of which had a special purpose, could independently provide its protection. Up to our days only three out of four sectors survived. The first one is called the Citadel, it was at all times key, here the command structure was located. The garrison sector housed the main forces of the regular army, and in the Civil Court there was a fortified settlement with civilians.

It must be said that many wars fell on the share of this fortress. That only cost three attempts to capture, undertaken by the Ottoman Empire. Also, these walls witnessed three Russian-Turkish wars, sustained multiple attacks by Ukrainian Cossacks. Today, this historical monument is under state protection, and access to it is open to all comers for a nominal fee. If in the near future it is planned to visit this place, then we recommend to visit the excursions conducted there with the participation of an experienced guide. This will make the trip to the Belgorod-Dnistrovsky fortress vivid and very memorable!
