Glioblastoma - prognosis

Hearing the diagnosis of "glioblastoma - a brain tumor," the patient is most often interested in the forecast of doctors for his future life. In this case, everything depends very much on the degree of the disease itself, as well as on how strong the body is in humans.

Degrees of glioblastoma

A glioblastoma is a malignant tumor that is formed from glial cells. It is one of the dangerous cancer diseases, because it rapidly progresses, has no clear boundaries, and is accompanied by necrotic processes.

Not all glioblastomas are the same. Depending on those present at her dangerous signs, the tumors are 4 degrees:

  1. 1 st degree - is a tiny new growth in the brain, which does not have pronounced signs of malignancy.
  2. The second degree is a tumor with a diameter of up to 5 mm, which has 1 sign of malignancy (most often an abnormal cell structure).
  3. 3rd degree - the tumor grows rapidly and has all the signs of malignancy, except for necrotic processes.
  4. The 4th degree is an inoperable glioblastoma, which is characterized by very rapid growth rates.

The prognosis of life with glioblastoma of the brain

For patients who have glioblastomas of the 1 st or 2 nd degree at an early stage, there is a chance, after surgery and the course of chemotherapy , to completely cure the disease, but sometimes relapses occur.

In the detection of glioblastoma in later periods, when it has already covered a large area of the brain and is related to the 3rd and 4th degrees of malignancy, any treatment most often gives the chance to only slightly increase the life span of the patient. Depending on the severity of the disease, this period ranges from a few weeks to 5 years. This is due to the fact that cancer can change the pace of its development.

An unfavorable prognosis is also affected by the difficulty of completely removing an overgrown tumor that does not have a uniform structure without hitting the vital centers in the brain. As a result, after a short-term improvement in the state of health, there may come a phase of exacerbation, that is, increased growth of the tumor.

Despite the fact that the survival prognosis is not the most favorable for patients with glioblastoma, one should never give up and it is worth continuing to fight cancer until the end, because every day in medicine new ways of treatment are created, even against such dangerous diseases.
